Under the Data Protection Act 2018, any UK business, sole trader, or freelancer that handles personal information electronically is legally required to register with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) and pay an annual data protection fee.

How Much Does It Cost?
The ICO fee depends on company size and turnover, but most small businesses fall into Tier 1:
Tier 1 (Micro-organisations): £52/year (or £47/year if paid via Direct Debit).
Applies to businesses with 10 or fewer staff OR annual turnover under £632,000.
Tier 2 (Small/Medium organisations): £78/year (or £73/year if paid via Direct Debit).
Applies to businesses with 250 or fewer staff OR annual turnover under £36,000,000.
